The stars shone and twinkled with the hinting of company soon to arrive, if you could see them. There was no wind, and the air around you was warm and comforting. Your eyes were closed; your feet already knowing the path to take you down to that place. Your pace was slow though your heart was racing. Beneath you grass wet with dew crunched softly; above the moon glowed. Three steps ahead of you there was an old wooden fence.

-one- you took a step.
-two- Another
-three- ~now~ you told yourself.
*jump* effortlessly you jumped over the fence and landed on the other side, your eyes still closed. Ten steps now.
-one-
-two-
-three-
-four-
-five- you paused and turned slightly to left, avoiding the tree you were about to walk into.
-six-
-seven-
-eight- you turned again to right. You had almost reached it. Gently you sighed allowing memories to guide your footsteps.
-nine-
-ten-

*sit* Your eyes opened. The scenery hadn’t changed at all since the last time you had been there. From your place on the sloping hill you smiled lightly. The gradual slope led to a lake, small and secluded from the world, surrounded by trees only locatable to those who knew its location. It was silent; not even birds dared sing on this hollowed ground. To your right was an ancient oak that towered above the others. Behind you the fence creaked. It had been so long ago, yet you could still remember planting that tree with him. Almost 100 years ago in fact. That was before he left you for ningenkai.

A familiar aching filled your chest. It came every time you came here; it was the feeling of your heart breaking. Every year you came, and every year you felt the pain. The pain hurt so much, but you came without fail to that spot. You had to. You couldn’t allow yourself to forget. You couldn’t forget that night, those feelings, more than that you couldn’t forget him. He had left you seven years ago. For a youkai that’s nothing, barely a year by standards. It still hurt. You still wanted to cry. But you couldn’t allow yourself that either. You couldn’t allow yourself to be weak. If you were strong and persistent maybe he would come back, maybe he hadn’t forgotten about you. Or maybe he had. Had he?

You don't remember me, but I remember you
I lie awake and try so hard not to think of you
But who can decide what they dream, and dream I do

In the shadowed silence a tear streamed down your face. You had loved him so much. He hadn’t been particularly powerful, or smart, or kind, or funny. He hadn’t brought you flowers, or sang sonnets. He had never even told you that he loved you back. But that didn’t stop you from falling head over heels for him. That didn’t stop you from wishing he had never gone. Or from wondering why. Why he had gone without even saying goodbye.

I believe in you
I'll give up everything just to find you
I have to be with you
To live, to breathe
You're taking over me

Had he left because of you? Something that you had said or did? Maybe he had gotten fed up with protecting you, or having to save you all the time. You had given him nothing but grief, caused him nothing but trouble. You had always been too weak to defend yourself, but you had grown stronger and even competed in a fighting competition two years ago. You had seen him there, but before you had caught his attention another woman walked up. A woman who was definitely more mature than you, stronger than you. Better than you. After you saw her embrace him after their fight you had left, not wanting to interrupt something. If he was happy you were glad for him; especially if he had found someone better for him than you. It still made you want to kill her for taking him.

Have you forgotten all I know, and all we had
You saw me mourning my love for you, and touched my hand
I knew you loved me then

I believe in you
I'll give up everything just to find you
I have to be with you
To live, to breathe
You're taking over me

You thought he had liked your playful ways, but were you too annoying, too childish, too immature for him? If he had told you, you would’ve changed for him. If only just to be with him one moment longer. If only to have his arms around you one last time, or to smell his scent. Had he forgotten? Or worse, remembered and yet moved on?

I look in the mirror and see your face
If I look deep enough
So many things inside that are
Just like you are taking over

The tears were falling freely now. Although you tried to stop yourself the pain was too much and broke from your iron will.
“Why did you go?” you yelled, bringing your knees up and hugging them to your chest. Your voice cracked. “I loved you,” you whispered as you sobbed. “I loved you, you baka,” years of heart break and heart ache flowed from you in your tears. Quiet sobs racked your body, your arms clenching ever tighter around yourself. The need to be held growing ever stronger. “Why?” you repeated through your tears. “Why?” It spoken so softly a dog would have strained to hear. The fact that he couldn’t hear you made little difference. Even if he could have he wouldn’t have answered your questions.

I believe in you
I'll give up everything just to find you
I have to be with you
To live, to breathe
You're taking over me

This place was the place where you had met him. Where he had saved your life and where you had first teased him. This was where you had gone to nurse his wounds, to train with him. This was where you hid from him when he was angry, and where he had found you every time.

I believe in you
(I believe in you)
I'll give up everything just to find you
I have to be with you
To live, to breathe
You're taking over me (taking over me)
You're taking over me (taking over me)
Taking over me

He had never seen you cry before. He looked at you silently from his place behind the tree. Why would YOU cry? What reason would you have had? Then you told him. You had cried out, knocking the air from him. You loved him? How? The salt in your tears mixed with the smells of wood and dirt. How many times had you cried like this? How long did he make you wait? He answered you without hesitation. You deserved at least that much.

“Because I didn’t know,” the voice cut through the air like a sharpened blade. Mid-weep you froze. That voice. You knew that voice. It was his. Breath had frozen in your lungs. Had you imagined it? “I never knew,” shaking slightly you looked around, but saw nothing. Then his shape stepped from the shadows. “Gomensai,”

Immediately you forced yourself to stand. Your eyes grew wide, your lips parted gently from shock. He took a step forward; you took a step back. _e/c_ eyes met his in an instant. They pierced through to your soul, daring you to move. He kissed you roughly without warning. Your eyes widened in surprise before closing instantly. The youkai broke into your mouth, tasting every inch of it. The instant he did so your legs went out, only to be caught by his arms. He pulled away as unexpectedly as he had kissed you. A slight pressure on his chest every now and again told him you were out of breath. Blood raced through your veins. Confusion took over and you broke from the embrace. The only way you managed to do so was because he let you. He went to move forward.

“I saw you at the tournament with a woman. You looked happy together.” You said. He was unsure if this was a question or a statement. He didn’t know how to answer your question so he didn’t. “I saw you fight. You’ve really gotten stronger since you left.” On the last word your voice cracked.

He had come for the simple reason that he had needed to see you. Make sure you were alright. But, you weren’t. And the reason that you weren’t alright was because of HIM. He couldn’t stand that. You had to be alright. You had to be happy; he had to make sure of that. It killed him to see you crying, over him nonetheless. He loved you too much to let that happen.
“This is pointless, I’m leaving.” He told you. Just like it always was his voice let no emotion leak out. “Get your things,” he finished. You blinked and shook your head quickly.
“What?”
“Baka onna, if you want to die here that’s your choice, you don’t have to come with me.” The realization hit. He WANTED you to come with you. A blush spread across your face.
“Do you mean it? I don’t want you to pity m---,” he silenced you with another kiss. Before you could gather your thoughts your eyes saw him walking away. Happiness spread over you like a wave. You ran up to him and walked beside him glancing at him from the corners of your eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner baka,” your eyes grew wide.
~How long was he standing there? ~ You thought blushing.
~ Long enough, ~ he replied through the mind link. There was silence on your end.
~ umm……….I was scared, ~
~Did you really mean it? ~ He asked eventually. You glared at him.
“Of course I meant it!” you shouted indignantly. Embarrassed you lowered your voice. “Unlike SOME people I don’t toy with people’s emotions.” Hiei flinched slightly. You flicked your hair over your shoulder in mock annoyance. He smirked. Hiei really did LOVE it when you were playful.

You stopped, sensing that Hiei had stopped moving.
“Hiei?” you asked warily. Your scream was muffled by his hand covering your mouth. Desperately you tried to relax your muscles as Hiei’s fangs punctured the skin on the crook of your neck. A stifled moan left you as his tongue ran over the wound, his mouth moving up to your ear.
“Mine,” he growled, sending shivers riveting up your spine. Despite yourself you giggled.
“I always was.” He sighed and moved from behind you. Smiling you reached forward and grabbed his hand. Hiei didn’t stop you. He couldn’t if he had tried. For the first time in his life he felt…….complete. It wasn’t really a fair trade off. A youkai claiming an angel as a mate wasn’t fair. An angel willingly loving him wasn’t exactly fair. An angel being set on earth just for him wasn’t very fair. But then again he wasn’t about to tell the judges. His blood red eyes turned to look at your own and felt his heart rate doubling. And how could he forget? The way you always looked so perfect on moonlit nights definitely wasn’t fair. A kiss on the cheek pulled him from his thoughts. Hiei watched you smiling contently, swaying from side to side. He must have done something really good natured in his past life to deserve this angel’s love.
